Exceptions allergens

Any ingredient derived from one of the fourteen legal allergens must be listed. There are a number of substances that are derived from one of these allergens that do not cause allergic reactions. Processes in which all allergenic proteins have been removed also prevent reactions from occurring.

After official assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), these types of derived products (derivatives) are placed on the exception list. In that case, the allergenic origin of an ingredient does not have to be stated. So glucose syrup is enough, this is not necessary wheatto be glucose syrup. Products that have not been assessed by EFSA or have not ended up on the list of exceptions must always be mentioned (regardless of the actual protein content).

In Annex II of REGULATION (EU) No. 1169/2011 the exceptions are included:

  • Phytosterols, phytosterol esters, phytostanol esters
  • Plant sterol esters
Milk (including lactose)
  • Whey for distillates
  • Lactitol (sweetener)
Nuts (see list) Distillates and ethyl alcohol
Celery None
Mustard Behenic acid, which is used in the manufacture of the emulsifiers E 470a, E 471 and E 477
Sesame seed None
