Sulphite rapid test

No lab required
Easy to perform
Results immediately available
Ideal for fast and cheap screening
To use for
> Measurement in (process) water or product
> Control raw materials
> Test end products
NOT suitable for red wine (but for white wine)
Measuring principle
Briefly insert the test strip into the sample solution and compare after 20 sec. the indicator zone with the color scale on the tube. If sulphite ions are present, the test zone will turn a salmon-like color. The darker the higher the concentration.
Explanation measurement method
Dark-colored products show a discoloration of the test strip. This means that the test is not suitable for red wine.
Sulfite occurs as free but also as bound sulfite. To measure the total sulfite content, the product must be brought to pH 12 by adding a few drops of lye. Control can be done with a simple pH paper.
The unit of measurement is sulphite (SO32-). The legal standards are set in sulfur dioxide (SO2). For this, the read value must be multiplied by 0,8. The result must also be converted to the original product, if it has been diluted beforehand.
Sensitivity
From 10 ppm, scale: 0 10 25 50 100 250 500 1000 mg/l sulphite (=ppm).
