Fast, in-house measurement of SENSIStrip rapid tests
SENSIStrip tests can be used with or without a reader
Replacement of (part of) external ELISA tests
Quantitative results in ppm (mg per kilo)
Accurate reading
> Easy to use
The SENSIStrip rapid tests can be easily visually assessed. No additional equipment is required. This determines whether the allergen is detectable or not. The strips can also be read with this optional reader, available separately. This reader measures the intensity of the lines on the strip and calculates the allergen content in ppm (parts per million or mg per kg). This method is similar to an ELISA analysis, but faster and more user-friendly.
This method therefore allows for reliable results to be obtained directly on-site, without external laboratory analysis. While accredited external analyses may still be necessary, the reader saves time and money by performing the measurements themselves.
Quantitative results are interesting for:
Strips derived from swabs can technically also be read using the reader, displaying values in ppm. However, for swabs, the measurement is based on mg per cm² of surface area rather than mg per kilogram of product. Because surface contamination cannot be directly compared to product standards in ppm, this can lead to misinterpretations. To avoid confusion, we therefore recommend reading swab strips visually only and not via the reader.
The procedure for measuring the strips is simple:

The strips can be easily visually assessed. No additional equipment or a reader is required. This determines whether the allergen is detectable or not.
However, the reader can determine the allergen content of the same strip. It measures the intensity of the lines on the strip and, based on that, calculates the allergen content in ppm (parts per million or mg per kg). This method is similar to an ELISA analysis, but faster and more user-friendly.
The reading with the reader gives the following results:

The test has deviating lines (per group of notes).
At higher concentrations, the intensity of the test line is suppressed. With the 2-line strip (not a Powerline), this can result in a reading that is too low. With some strip variants, this effect occurs even at relatively low concentrations (for example, lupine from 100 ppm). In that case, use a dilution of the extract (the procedure is described in the manual that comes with the tests).
The Powerline variants feature a third line on the strip: the hook line. This prevents incorrect readings at higher concentrations. Furthermore, semi-quantitative results are available in two ranges (">" and "Hook effect").
Extensive comparative studies have been conducted between ELISA assays and the reader. Validation data are available upon request. It is, of course, important to validate the tests and the reader for your own products and allergenic ingredients. Comparing results from negative and positive samples with the reader and laboratory analyses is recommended.
