ATP measurement is ideal for fast and direct hygiene monitoring, for example in the food industry but also in other places where hygiene is important, such as dental practices and clinics. An ATP luminometer is used in combination with an ATP test. There are swabs for surfaces and swabs that are specially designed for water samples.

Measuring principle

ATP is found in organic pollution and micro-organisms. It is the energy carrier in all plant, animal and microbiological cells. When the test is activated, the sample comes into contact with a substance that reacts with the ATP present. This reaction produces light. This light signal is measured in the dark chamber of the luminometer. The amount of light is displayed in RLU: relative light units. The more light, the more pollution.

Cleaning verification (allergens)

Cleaning is a crucial part of a good allergen management system. Effective cleaning removes contamination - micro-organisms and product residues. An ATP measurement measures ATP and not allergenic proteins. Foods contain cells of plant or animal origin. All cells contain the energy carrier ATP. In addition to micro-organisms, products also contain ATP. An ATP measurement is therefore suitable for determining any remaining product residues with possible allergens as an indirect analysis. 

CAUTION: ATP can be destroyed in highly heated products. For these products, ATP measurement is not suitable for determining the presence of product residues and therefore allergens. In these cases, only bacteriological ATP is measured. Therefore, always check the ATP signal of the products that are processed. This can be a dirty surface for cleaning. This must give a high signal, otherwise ATP measurement is not suitable for that application. This is part of the substantiation of the choice of the method and does not have to be repeated with every cleaning.
